Counseling Office
At Cherokee Elementary School, we recognize that early childhood is a crucial time for academic, social, and emotional development. Our elementary school counseling program is designed to provide students with the tools and support they need to succeed in school and life. Our counselor works closely with students, teachers, families, and the community to foster a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environment.
How Our Elementary School Counselors Support Students
Classroom Counseling Lessons (School Counseling Core Curriculum)
School counselors teach whole-group lessons to help students develop essential life skills. These lessons include engaging activities such as discussions, group projects, role-playing, and art activities. Topics covered include:
✅ Character Education
✅ Bullying Prevention
✅ Social Skills
✅ Career Development
✅ Conflict Resolution
✅ Self-Control & Decision Making
✅ Personal Safety & Awareness
Individual Counseling
Students may face challenges that affect their academic progress, social interactions, or emotional well-being. School counselors provide short-term, one-on-one counseling to help students work through difficulties and develop coping skills.
Individual counseling is available for all students. During individual counseling, students are empowered to create their own goals and to build on their strengths in order to make positive changes. Topics covered during individual counseling will vary based on the student's needs, but can include: anger management, conflict resolution, improving academic skills, coping with death, dealing with crisis situations, etc.
Collaboration & Family Support
Our elementary school counselors work closely with teachers, staff, and families to create a positive and inclusive school environment. They provide:
✅ Consultation with Parents – Discussing concerns about student behavior, emotions, or academic progress.
✅ Collaboration with Teachers & Staff – Offering strategies to support students in the classroom.
✅ Hygiene & Holiday Assistance – Connecting families with essential items and holiday support programs.
✅ Referrals for Community Resources – Helping families access mental health services, food assistance, and other local support programs.
