Our 5th grade kids enjoyed a cool treat before their fall break! Kona Ice really hits the spot.

First Grade has been having fun during guided reading, learning about Benjamin Franklin, participating in Talent Development, and writing narrative stories.

Today is National IT Professional Day and Eastside is proud that we have one of the best! Tandalea Mendez is a knowledgeable Technology Specialist and a generous person. She spreads joy and cheer wherever she goes. Eastside is so blessed to have her as part of the team.

We are pleased to announce the Eastside Elementary Teacher of the Year, Megan Smith! Mrs. Smith teaches 1st grade. She is supported everyday by her faith and by her loving family.

Thank you to all the families who have already participated in our SchoolStore fundraiser! We are on our way to reaching our goal, but we need everyone's help to meet it. The funds from this program go to support the library and literacy programs.
If your family has not participated, there's still time!

Today we read the bilingual story The Upside Down Boy. The story is about a young boy, Juanito, moving to a new city and school. He feels very “upside down” due to the language barrier between him and his teacher and classmates. Juanito’s family is Hispanic and speaks fluent Spanish, whereas his teacher and peers speak English. This is a huge adjustment for Juanito.
Ms. Z is Hispanic and was raised in a Spanish speaking home, so she is fluent in Spanish AND English! After I read the story in English, she read parts of it in Spanish. This was so awesome! Our students LOVED it! They couldn’t believe how quickly the words rolled off of her tongue. 🥰

In honor of National Arts in Education week, Eastside would like to highlight our two hard-working arts teachers.
Cindi Hicks teaches the music education classes and sponsors several honor choirs during the year. She loves music and enjoys inspiring new musicians.
Olivia Escutia teaches the art classes. She is very creative and encourages our students to use imagination in their art pieces.

The week of September 11 - 15 is National Art in Education week. In addition other academic classes, Eastside students get to experience an art and a music class each week. 4th grade is making stamps and learning the words to the Star Spangled Banner this week.
"The arts significantly boost student achievement, reduce discipline problems, and increase the odds students will go on to graduate from college" - Arne Duncan
